William ChangWilliam fits right into our use of established, tried and true techniques that are effective using good quality artificial foliage. William uses two different artificial/faux plants: polyester or polythene. He generally chooses fabric artificial foliage because of its natural quality and appearance. Below are questions about artificial plants answered by William.

1. How did you choose landscaping, specifically artificial landscaping, as a career?

My exposure from my previous work guided me into this career. I continually develop and learn the skills and techniques required, and I feel passionate about my creations.

2. How do you come up with the fantastic designs you create?

When you’re passionate with your job or you love what you do, by understanding the client needs, you become extra creative. I sometimes re-create ideas from my previous designs. Each projects comes with a challenge and this is where you apply your creativity.

3. What is the process of designing an artificial wall?

Firstly, an extensive discussion with the client or architect to establish the following:

a) What is the requirement for the space?

b) What effect is required?
c) What is the budget?

Once these basics have been established, I can sit down and prepare some ideas for the client to choose from.

When we all understand what is required, we can finalise the scheme and start creating it using the highest quality materials available to create the most realistic artificial landscape possible.

4. What technology do you use?

There is no new technology to design an artificial wall. As long we choose good quality artificial foliage, the traditional techniques work very well.

5. What fabric and plant-type do you choose, and how do you make that decision?

There are two different types of artificial plants: polyester or polythene (fabric or plastic). From my experience, I generally choose or recommend fabric foliage because of its natural quality and appearance.

6. What do you do differently that makes these plants last longer in an outdoor environment such as Dubai?

Exterior and interior are the two types of artificial or faux plants. For exterior requirements, we always propose UV protected artificial or faux plants as these retain their colour in the sunlight. Untreated foliage tends to turn a blue colour after short exposure to sunlight. With interior foliage, the choice is between fire-resistant or non-fire resistant foliage.

7. What are the dos and don’ts of maintaining artificial plants that help in longevity of plants?

Artificial material will always require dusting and cleaning on monthly or quarterly basis using micro fabric duster and leaf shine or anti-static spray for interior. A light wash with low pressure water for exterior keeps them looking fresh.

Artificial have a life span too. The duration is dependent on the type of artificial plants installed and the environmental conditions of the location. Maintenance is essential to keep the foliage looking clean, fresh. A dusty display looks artificial, whereas a clean one gives the impression of real foliage.

8. Would you recommend inclusion of artificial flowers in artificial design?

Artificial flowers are most commonly used in floral arrangements. But if the design requires it, we can recommend a limited amount of flowers. Overdoing the use of artificial flowers can make the wall look artificial and contrived. If the client insists on them, we carefully select those which match and complement the design.

9. What is the ideal way of installing artificial plants?

We generally build our walls on a standard size board. These are then fixed to the wall. This system allows us to cut the boards to fit the wall or to even create interesting shapes.

10. What’s your advice to budding landscape designers?

One key point is to mimic nature as much as possible. Unless the design and flow of nature is emulated, any artificial arrangement will look just that – artificial. If you imitate the amazing designs that nature creates, you can produce an artificial product that imitates the real thing to the point where most people are unaware of the fact that it is not in fact real.

Since trends keep on changing, any designer must be flexible in adapting to these changes. Never be afraid of experimenting with your creations. Innovation is the key to success.

William’s efforts are all about making his artificial creations and landscape designs look as much as possible like Nature had created them. This is a major objective at Planters Artificial.

William notes that trends are changing all the time in the artificial wall business. Designers need to be sensitive and flexible to these changes. Innovation is a must. The key to success in the artificial business is to be creative in responding to client’s landscaping needs.
